Forest Management Plans

American Tree Farm System Plan (10-10,000 acres)

A Tree Farm management plan covers all aspects of the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Standards of Sustainability which are a set of guidelines designed to help woodland owners be effective stewards of the land.  You can view the standards here.  Tree Farm plans provide a concise overview of the property, but are not as detailed as other forest management plans.  It is important to note that all of the management plans on this page will qualify for the Tree Farm program.  A Tree Farm specific plan, however, may not necessarily be as detailed as the other plans listed.

This plan can be used in order to get certified as a Tree Farm and receive the famous green and white sign.  Many foresters are also certified Tree Farm inspectors and can write your plan and also send in your initial inspection to complete the certification process.

Woodland Resource Action Plan (10-1,000 acres)

Woodland Resource Action Plans (WRAPs) are intended to provide a good description of the current and potential values of woodland, and a blueprint of activities to reach woodland owner’s objectives to maintain and improve their woods.

Cost-Share funding up to 50% of the value of the plan is available for WRAPs through the WoodsWISE Incentives program, which is run by the Maine Forest Service.   To see how the application and payment process works, click here

NRCS Conservation Activity Plan (CAP)

CAP plans through the Natural Resources Conservation Service are quite comprehensive and very similar to Forest Stewardship plans.  Landowners that apply for cost-share funding through the NRCS could potentially get up to 100% reimbursement for having a CAP plan written.  More information on CAPs can be found on the NRCS website here.
